Register as an Architect

The Council of Architecture (COA) is a statutory regulatory body constituted by the Government of India under the Architects Act, 1972 to regulate the education and practice of the architectural profession throughout the country. The council is also mandated to maintain the Register of Architects.

Any person desirous of practicing as an “Architect” in India must be registered with the Council of Architecture. Registration is granted to individuals possessing qualifications recognized under the Architects Act, 1972.

Registration with the Council of Architecture entitles an individual to:

  • Practice the profession of architecture in India, subject to valid registration and renewal;
  • Use the title and style of “Architect”;
  • Be included in the Register of Architects maintained by COA.

The title and style of “Architect” may also be used by a firm (partnership) of architects, provided all the partners of the firm are Architects and registered with the Council of Architecture.

A person who possesses a recognized foreign qualification, as specified under Section 15 of the Architects Act, 1972 and listed in Schedule 15, shall also be eligible for registration under the Architects Act, 1972.
